These are my new old shoes. I re-painted my Vans. I was getting tired of them.
Everything on these shoes has something to do with Mei. The ear of corn in the top right has "for Mommy" written on it. The bottom right is Mei if she were a crab. The backs of the shoes have soot sprites and Mei's black footprints.
The back-story behind these;
I love "My Neighbor Totoro". I found out a few days ago that I love it even more. My little girl has been sick. She has been doing quite a bit of lap-sitting because of it. I decided a rainy night would be a great time to sit together and watch Totoro. She hung on to every second of that movie.
Mei reminds me of her. Wila (my daughter) would have no problem with walking right up and making friends with a big Totoro. That's why I painted Mei. It's sort of a special nod to Wila.
**Disclaimer I only speak and write in English. If I am incorrect on any of the Japanese characters I have used--- my bad. I used Google Translate.
THANK YOU!! For the DD, Faves and all-around awesome feedback!! It's officially made my day. I didn't expect it. I may not be able to thank for all of the faves, but-- I promise I will personally respond to all of your comments ASAP.
Someone totally made some fan art of my fan art! Yay! love it! They did an awesome job!
First off, I'd just like to say that although I don't know much about shoe art, this thing looks freaking AWESOME
But yes, carrying on. I really like the bright blue you used as the background colour. In addition to the rainbows, these colours make the shoe stand out a lot. It captures people's attention, and makes them want to look at it longer to stare for details, details that you have also done very well to capture
Although your Totoro or Mei may not look the exact same, it has, as you say, a cartoonish/childish feel to it, which is exactly what you were aiming for All around the shoe too, you've put in what design you could to really make the shoes more "Totoro" themed. The corn, Mei as a crab, soot sprites, and the cat bus...every little detail fully captures the essence of Totoro
A job well done on a VERY unique pair of shoes. If this goes for sale, studio ghibli fans will crave for them. Beware XD!
